A tropical grass native to Asia, it has been growing for over 4,000 years. Their first use was of the ancestral strain Saccharum robustum as a "chewing cane" in Melanesia, possibly in New Guinea. Then, Sugarcane was introduced by the early Pacific islanders into Indonesia and the farther Pacific reaches.
Growing sugarcane plants were once a major cash crop for Pacific areas but are now more widely cultivated in American and Asian tropics for bio-fuel. Growing sugar cane in Brazil, the highest sugar cane producer, is very lucrative as a high proportion of car and truck fuel is extracted with ethanol from sugarcane plants.
