Thyme is among the most widely used and best known herbs. It is a striking plant with violet flowers which attracts bees and other insects. It grows into a spreading carpet of dense, shrubby growth and is suitable in rock gardens and patios for filling in crevices. It is also suitable with other Mediterranean herbs, such as oregano and rosemary, for growing in pots. When crushed or rubbed against the foliage releases a heavy fragrance.
Thymus serpyllum, wild or creeping thyme, is native to a broad area of Europe and Asia, including the UK. In sunny sites, like in gravel and rock gardens, it is a good choice for ground cover. This can also be used to build an aromatic lawn with thyme.
