The elephant foot, Dioscorea elephantipes, is a perennial caudiciform deciduous vine of the family monocot yam (Dioscoreaceae). The exposed, enlarged tuberous base is an organ that stores water, called a caudex. Most commonly, the caudex reaches 60-90 cm in diameter, but often 3 (or more) meters and is coated in rough armor-like plates. It produces a staggering seasonal growth of up to 6 metres. The leaves are shaped to the heart. It bears small yellowish green flowers.
