Blue Globe Thistle (Echinops Ritro) - Sowing Globe Thistle seeds give a distinct texture to your garden! They 're a perfect addition to the garden cottage or a mixed perennial garden. Globe Thistle flowers are violet and blue in colors and have a diameter of up to 1 3/4 inches.
Before opening, the flower heads give good color, so that the bloom season is prolonged. It has 6-8 inch thistle-like foliage with distinctive spines. Globe Thistle plants are relatively resistant to drought, have low maintenance and are easily grown from flower seeds. If the initial Globe Thistle blooms are deadheaded, a couple of smaller, shorter blooms appear.
Globe Thistle has plenty of flower seed so it's a good self-seeder, and deadheading will help slow down that process a little bit. The plant will grow so much in richer soils that it will need staking. The basal leaves are rapidly decaying so best to plant low-growing plants next to the Globe Thistle. Hands can be cut by flowering and foliage, so it is best to wear gloves when handling. Globe Thistle makes a stunning cut flora. These soft blossoms are drying well, too. Cut the stems, and hang up in a warm, ventilated position.
