Planting Instructions:

  1. Direct Sowing: For best results, sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost date when the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (16°C).
  2. Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1-1.5 inches deep and 2-4 inches apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart.
  3. Soil Preparation: Soybeans prefer well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Enrich the soil with organic compost for optimal growth.
  4. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and pod development, but avoid waterlogging.
  5. Thinning: Thin seedlings to 4-6 inches apart if they are too crowded, ensuring adequate space for each plant to thrive.
  6. Care: Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Soybeans fix their own nitrogen, but a balanced organic fertilizer can be applied if needed.
  7. Harvesting: Soybeans can be harvested as edamame when the pods are green and plump, or left to mature fully for dry beans. Pick edamame pods when they are 2-3 inches long and bright green. For dry beans, allow the pods to turn brown and dry on the plant before harvesting.
