Planting Instructions:
- Direct Sowing: Sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost date when the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (16°C).
- Sowing Depth: Plant seeds 1 inch deep and 2-3 feet apart in rows spaced 3-4 feet apart. Alternatively, sow seeds in hills, spacing hills 3-4 feet apart and planting 3-4 seeds per hill.
- Soil Preparation: Zucchini prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Enrich the soil with organic compost before planting.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during germination and early growth stages. Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the leaves, which can lead to fungal diseases.
- Thinning: Thin seedlings to 1-2 plants per hill or 2-3 feet apart in rows once they have 2-3 true leaves.
- Care: Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer as needed to support vigorous growth.
- Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as squash bugs and cucumber beetles. Use organic pest control methods as necessary.
- Harvesting: Harvest zucchini when they are young and tender, about 6-8 inches long, for the best flavor and texture. Regular harvesting encourages continuous production.
