Planting Instructions:
-
Seed Preparation: Coreopsis seeds do not require any special preparation before planting.
-
Timing: Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring after the last frost, or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date for earlier blooms.
-
Soil Preparation: Select a location with well-draining soil. Coreopsis thrives in sandy or loamy soil but can adapt to various soil types. The soil pH should be slightly acidic to neutral (5.5-7.5).
-
Sowing Depth: Scatter seeds on the soil surface and gently press them in. Do not cover with soil, as they require light to germinate. Space seeds about 12-18 inches apart to accommodate mature plant size.
Growing Conditions:
- Light: Full sun is essential for optimal growth and flowering. Coreopsis needs at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, Coreopsis can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, including heat and mild frost.
- Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Once established, Coreopsis is drought-tolerant and only requires occasional watering.
Care Tips:
- Watering: Water young plants regularly until established. Mature plants need watering only during prolonged dry spells.
- Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
- Fertilizing: Coreopsis typically does not require much fertilization. If desired, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring.
- Pruning: Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering. Cut back the plants in late fall after flowering has finished.
Pest and Disease Management:
- Pests: Coreopsis is generally resistant to most pests. Occasionally, aphids or leafhoppers may appear. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
- Diseases: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew. Plant in well-draining soil to avoid root rot.
