Preparing to plant: Before planting potato seeds, prepare the soil by removing any rocks, weeds, or other debris. Loosen the soil to a depth of about 8 inches and mix in some compost or other organic matter. Potato seeds should be planted in the spring after the danger of frost has passed.
-
Planting potato seeds: Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep and 6-8 inches apart. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, as excess moisture can cause the seeds to rot.
-
Germination and growth: Potato seeds will germinate in about 2-3 weeks if the soil temperature is around 60-70°F. The seedlings will appear as small green shoots above the soil. Once the seedlings are a few inches tall, thin them out so that they are spaced about 12 inches apart.
-
Care and maintenance: Potato plants require regular watering, especially during the hot summer months. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Fertilize the plants every few weeks with a balanced fertilizer. As the plants grow, mound soil around the stems to encourage the development of more tubers.
-
Harvesting: Depending on the variety, potatoes can take anywhere from 70-120 days to mature. Once the leaves begin to turn yellow and die back, it's time to harvest the potatoes. Carefully dig up the tubers with a fork, being careful not to damage them. Allow the potatoes to dry for a few days before storing them in a cool, dry place.
