Strelitzia reginae, commonly known as the bird of paradise flower, is a tropical plant native to South Africa that can be grown indoors or outdoors in warm climates. It has banana-like leaves and colorful flowers that resemble the head of a bird.
Germination Instructions:
- Remove the orange tufts from the seeds and soak them in lukewarm water for 24 to 48 hours to soften the seed coat.
- Nick the seeds with a knife or a small file to scarify them and increase the germination rate.
- Fill a planting tray with moist potting soil and sow the seeds 1/2 to 1 inch deep and several inches apart.
- Cover the tray with a pane of glass and place it in a warm location (over 80 degrees Fahrenheit) with indirect light.
- Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until the seeds germinate, which may take four to eight weeks.
- Transplant the seedlings into individual pots when they have two or three leaves and grow them in bright light with regular watering and feeding.
